THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

Paid a commendable tribute to the memory of the brave
men, living or dead, who represented the State in the Civil
War, by appropriating thirty-two thousand, four hundred
dollars, to prepare and print two thousand volumes of the
" Revised Register of the Soldiers and Sailors of New Hamp-
shire in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-'66, Prepared and
Published by Authority of the Legislature, by Augustus D.
Ayling, Adjutant-General."

One city and several towns have published the record con-
taining the names of the men who represented them. The
main object in the publication of this small book, too long
delayed since the close of the war, is to furnish the people of
Manchester with an alphabetically arranged record, copied
from General Ayling's Register, for easy reference to the
pages as indicated, for all the particulars regarding the men
who represented this city in the Civil War.

WAR BEGUN.

Sumter Attacked!

[Special Dispatch to the Daily Mirror.]

Boston, Apr. 13.
Fighting commenced at Charleston yesterday. Seven bat-
teries played on Sumter all day, and Anderson replied.
Rumored, portions of the Fort destroyed. Two Confederate
troops wounded. Bombardment be resumed to-day.

LATER.

Chaklestox, April 12. War is inaugurated. The bat>
teries on Sullivan's Island, Morris Island, at other points
opened on Ft. Sumter at 4 o'clock this morning. Fort Sum-
ter has returned the fire and a brisk cannonading has been
kept up — no information has been received from the seaboard
yet. The military are under arms and the whole populace
on the street.

STILL LATER.

The fii'ing has continued all day uninterruptedly. Two of
the Ft. Sumter guns have been silenced, and it is reported
that a breach has been made in the south-east wall. The
answer to Gen. Beauregard's demand by Maj. Anderson was
that he would surrender when his supplies were exhausted,
if he was not reinforced.

Not a casualty has yet happened to 'any of the force of 19
batteries — only 7 had yet been opened on Sumter. The
remainder are held in reserve for the expected fleet. — 2000
men reached the city this morning and embarked for Morns
Island.

The firing has ceased for the night to be resumed at day-
light in the morning, unless an attempt is made to reinforce
Fort Sumter, to repel which ample arrangements have been
made. Only two men were wounded to-day.

The Pawnee, Harriet Lane and another steamer are
reported off the bar. April 13,12:30. It is impossible to
reinforce Fort Sumter to-night as a storm is raging. The
mortar battery will be playing on Fort Sumter all night.

PENSION ROLLS.

In 1820, the United States government printed one volume,
and, in 1835-36, three more, said to contain the names of
120,000 pensioners who were soldiers in the Revolution.
The names are grouped by counties in the respective states,
and the tables show dates of pensions, branch of service, age,
amount of money paid to each up to March 4, 1834, and dates
of death of perhaps one fourth of those who had died. The
number of New Hampshire pensioners named in the four vol-
umes is 2,906.

In June, 1840, a census of pensioners was taken through-
out the country, and the names, ages, and places of residence
